| MAJOR BOX ® has created this page to help you to better understand and then tell us about your project. It contains a quick review of the language used in setup box manufacturing. Many of these features and finishes

" Set-up "
or
" Rigid " Box
- a chipboard paper box of rigid construction formed or
"set-up" and ready to be used.
It has a base and lid and is usually wrapped with a
paper
base - the lower part of a set-up box
bleed - that part of a printed sheet that
extends beyond the trim edge of a sheet
blind embossing - a logo, image etc. which is stamped
without ink or metallic leaf. This leaves
a base-relief effect.
box - a complete set that includes both a
base and a lid
calliper - the thickness of the paper that is shown in
mils (thousandths of an inch)
camera ready art - completed artwork which is ready for
photography or is on disk.
chipboard - basic stock in most set-up
boxes. It is a combination of recycled paper and virgin kraft.
clasp -
a metallic closure with joint used to securely close a lid or lid flap to a base
closing -
placing the lids on the bases
coated paper - paper with a smooth surface
coating
combination dye - a plate which applies foil and
embosses simultaneously.
corner cut - removing the excess corner
material from either the board or the wrap
die-cutting - the process of cutting
special shapes into boxes, inserts or paper
easel - a support attached to a box for display
purposes
embossed finish - a texture applied to paper or light
board to resemble other materials such as wood, fabric or leather
embossing - the process in which paper
is pressed between metal dies to create an image in relief
flap lid - a
flat lid attached to a box. It has no
sides or ends
foil - a thin layer of metal applied to
paper or board to make metallic papers or to a mylar carrier for hot stamping
hinge -
the method and/or joint used to attach a lid to a base
hot stamp - an imprinting method in
which metals or pigmented foils are applied to a sheet with a heated metal die
or plate
inner packing - materials used in supporting,
positioning or cushioning an item during shipment
insert - any construction of board, vacform etc.
placed or attached into a box to hold a product in place
kraft -
a paper or board containing unbleached wood pulp which is brown in colour
label -
a plain or printed die-cut paper or board affixed to a box. These are used to enhance or identify the
contents
lid or cover - the top portion of a set-up
box
lid support - ribbon used to hold an
opened hinged lid in place
loose wrapping - the process of covering a lid with
a paper wrap so that only the edges of the
wrap receive the adhesive
matte finish - a dull paper finish without
gloss or lustre
papers - commonly used as wraps in the manufacturer
of set-up boxes
partitions - slotted or folded pieces
of boxboard fitted together to form a series of compartments and then placed
in a box without glue to create sections
pasted board - made of two or more boards
glued together to yield a thicker board
poly bag - clear plastic bag
used to pack and/or protect the finished product
printed wrap - a paper or other suitable wrap material (book cloth, vinyl etc.)
with custom printing, logos etc.
pvc - poly vinyl chloride, a clear plastic
used in making see-through lids
scoring
- making an impression or crease in a box blank to
facilitate bending or folding.
skeleton - a set-up box base or lid which is not wrapped
slide box - a box in which the lid is
in the form of a shell into which the base is inserted at the side or the end
slipcase - a case into which a product such as a book
or a binder is inserted
spine - the back of a slipcase
stay - material used for securing and
reinforcing the corners of a base, lid or tray
stained board - a board in which stain is
applied to only one side of board stock
stock paper - a printed paper acquired in bulk.
It comes in a myriad of designs, colours and finishes.
telescope box - a box in which the lid fits totally over the base which
results in a full telescope. Thumbcuts
are recommended
thumbcuts - semi-circular cuts in the edge of
a lip to facilitate opening
tight wrapping - the process of covering a lid with a paper wrap so the entire back
of the wrap receives the adhesive
tray - a base or receptacle
for which no lid is required
turn in - that part of the wrap which ends on the
inside of the lid
velcro closure - a button or strip of velcro material
used to securely close a lid or lid flap to a base
wrap - material such as paper, book cloth,
vinyl etc. which is glued to the base or lid of a set-up box
